Daniel asks…

House Training my dog with a bell?

I am currently in the process of housetraining my dog with a bell, and I have been doing it for about 3 days now. He is extremely bright, so when I am near the bell and he needs to go, he will ring it. And yesterday he shocked me when he rang it on his own. But since then, he has already had 2 accidents in the house. Have any of you used this method? How long did it take to train your dog? And during the process of training, did he/she seem to remember at times and forget at others?

Thanks

Anna Walker answers:

I have been trying for a few months, and am still trying! I have an 8 month old Miniature Pinscher. Occasionally he will ring the bell every five minutes all day. Otherwise, he ignores its existence. I am still diligently ringing it with his paw every time I take him out to potty and taking him out to potty every time he rings it himself. I am hoping eventually that he will finally get it, but so far, not a lot of progress. Good luck, I hope the process is easier for you than it has been for me!

Lisa asks…

How should i train my dog to ring a bell when she has to go outside??

my dogs 3 1/2 years old and shes not house trained yet how do i ?

Anna Walker answers:

I would take that dog outside every hour and right after meals. Give high praise and a treat when she relieves outside. If you want her to use the bell, let her see you ring the bell every time you take her out for a couple days. Then put her paw to the bell before going out and eventually she will make the connection.

Charles asks…

How to potty train your dog with bells? Big house need to know how to set up.?

I wish to use this method, many people agree that this idea is best. Just one question, my house is big and how would I set it up? Do I just put multiple bells on certain doors so it can tell me it needs to go out? Example, my room than the exit door?

I’m training a 3 year old dog and a 6 month puppy at the same time. Is it possible to train them both at the same time? One last thing, how do I train them, get them to listen without a leash on?

Anna Walker answers:

Very easily! Hang a bell on the door to 3 inches from the floor. Take dog to door, and use your right hand to lift the right paw. Swipe bells and say whatever command you want. I say “ring the bell”..ha ha ….then, immediately go out. So simple, but takes time. Within a certain amount of time, they all learn.

Use on one, or all of your doors. To speed up process, swipe paw, give treat and praise. Do this over and over…they get it….

So, hark hear the bells….lol

Ken asks…

My dog pees whenever a non family member comes into the house and pets her. can i train her not to do this?

She is a miniature long-haired dachaund. She gets excited and wants people to pet her because she will roll over on her back but as soon as they pet her she pees. She is house trained really well, we attatched a bell to the door that she rings whenever she has to go out. If I can train her not to pee when visitors per her, then how?

Anna Walker answers:

How old is she? Sometimes young dogs outgrow this behavior but sometimes they don’t. I would tell my visitors not to pet her until she calms down and gets a few good sniffs of them.

Linda asks…

How do you train a dog to use a bell at the door when they have to potty?

I have a 7 month old female Golden Retriever. She was spayed a couple of days ago and doesn’t seem to be improving on her potty training which I assumed would be done by now. She continually pees in the house and especially in her cage. We have tried to take her out every couple hours and she will pee outside BUT then she just comes in the house and pees immediately inside.

Anna Walker answers:

I trained my dog on that. He took a while too. Whenever you take him outside stop and lift his paw to the bell to ring it. Then let him out. Eventually he will associate the bell with going out and learn to do it by himself.
