The key to effective housetraining is consistency. Unless you are prepared to devote a certain amount of time, effort, and patience, housetraining efforts will be frustrating.

Dog Keeping your Chihuahua Puppy In a kennel help house train?
Ok so I got a chihuahua Puppy and she goes pee like ALOT. So, my mom wanted me to ask if keeping her in a wire kennel helps house train them to not go pee and poo so much in the house ? I’m not sure how it would work but maybe somhow, because they wont go to the bathroom in their living space or somthing? of course im not going to keep her in there 24/7 but maybe just when im in school and stuff?
But i know that she just has a really small bladder and dosnt know quite how to control i yet. but like I said this is my moms question not mine. I personally dont think it would make a difference but yeah.
Like I said Its just a question, so please no rude answers. and if you cant bother actually ANSWERING the question don’t say anything.. Thanks

Take her outside every 15 minutes or so and if she pees or poops give her lots of praise. As the days go on take her out about every 30 minutes or so.She will learn to hold it and learn to use the outdoors as a bathroom. You should never keep a dog in a cage for more then a few hours,it’s unhealthy. If a dog is locked up all day then gets out they will be really hyper and bouncing off the walls. Also since she’s a puppy she won’t be able to hold it if she’s locked up for along time. She will eventually go & she won’t like going in her bed.Remember, never get mad at her for something that we all have to do.Remember the number one ingredient for loving a puppy is PATIENCE. Good Luck

How do I house train my new puppy?
In two weeks, I will be getting a puppy. It’s a mixed breed of long-haired chihuahua and poodle. They tend to stay small, but I’ve never had an indoors dog before and I don’t really like the smell of dog pee and poo, if you get my point.
Thanks for the help!

Anna Walker answers:
Get rid of pee pads or newspaper. They only confuse dogs and puppies and they think going indoors is OK.
Get a crate, and train.
Take puppy outside A LOT… Praise puppy when she goes potty out there.
Everytime pupy eats, wakes up, plays, drinks some water, GO OUTSIDE FOR POTTY BREAK and of course if you see her sniffing around nose to the ground GO OUTSIDE but first distract her from searching for the potty spot!
Puppies cannot hold it that well so go out often and if there is an accident show puppy the mess and tell her NO, and head outside.
When you take puppy outside say ” wanna go outside” OR just “Outside!” and go towards the door… Eventually she will know what you mean.
When im outside with my 3 dogs I tell them go peepee ( i know its corny, but they know what I mean)
You can use the crate when your are not able to watch puppy and at night for sleep.
To clean pee and poop get a spray like OUT that takes away the odour that will attract your puppy back to that spot and make her wanna pee there again.
GOOD LUCK!

Ken asks…
How do I house train a dog when I’m at work 8 hours a day?
s:I’m confused as to go how to house train my Shipoo puppy. She is 8 weeks old and I’m out of the house from 7-3pm M-F. I’m crate training her as well. When I’m home, and I live in an apartment, I take her to my small backyard which has no grass, and when she has to go I take here there. What should I do at night time? Should I make her use her pee pad in a particular area or should I take her outside? When I go to work I keep her in a play pen and leave out pee pads b/c I know she has to go every few hours. I don’t want Zoe to get confused as to where she needs to go. Any suggestions?
I know a lot of people who work and have pets. I didn’t think it would be a problems since so many people do this. I did not get her from a petstore. My aunt’s dog had a little of 7 and simply could not keep her. She does gets lots of love and play when I’m there. I heard that keeping them confined in a crate for more than 3 hours is cruel and would simply go nuts…I was told that putting her in a playpen was best thing or putting a gate in the kitchen to give them space.

Anna Walker answers:
Why did you get a puppy that you knew you were going to be leaving alone for 8 hours at a time? I am surprised any good breeder or rescue would place a pup with you. An 8 week old puppy should be with its littermates anyway but don’t expect it to learn anything when you aren’t with it — you are actually just teaching her to go whenever she wants to. Seems you might would have wanted to find this stuff out BEFORE getting a puppy, huh?
