Your Questions About How To House Train Dog Video

Thomas asks…
How to house train a dog?
I am getting a female Shiba Inu puppy. How can I train her so she learns not to relieve herself in the house? If you could reccomend a YouTube video or a website I’d appreciate it.

Anna Walker answers:
Do not rub her nose in it or yell at her when she pees or poos in the house. By yelling at it or pushing it’s nose into it when it peed or pooped in the house, your teaching it not to go bathroom in front of you. The best way is to take it out around every 30 min for the 8-9 week age. It sounds like a lot, but it’s the best way to set your dog up for success. When the dog does go outside, give it lots of praise and sound really happy. It took around two days for my 8 week shiba to learn that “I need to go pee when I go outside.” She still had an accident every once or twice a week, but nothing compared to the first day I got her.

How often do puppies need to?
I was watching a training video on dogs, and it says when your older dog isn’t house trained, you need to go back to basics and treat them like a puppy. So I was just curious as to how many times a puppy needs to go out?
She is a chocolate lab if that helps at all.

Anna Walker answers:
It depends on how old the puppy is, (as they get older and begin to get the idea, you can gradually increase the time, just as you would with a toddler) and also on whether you’re leaving the puppy/dog in his crate, because if you are she will hold on for longer so as not to soil the nest. Also you soon get to know when in her routine she’s likely to want to go, especially early in the morning and after food or drink, also dogs like being taken out at regular times so they come to expect a ‘pee break.’ Things to watch out for are circling and sniffing, which usually suggest she’s thinking about ‘going.’ With a biggish dog like a Lab, you certainly want to try to avoid accidents! Of course, give lots of praise and a treat for ‘success,’ and just try to clean up without being cross. Use diluted biological washing liquid to clean up with, as ordinary carpet cleaner or disinfectant doesn’t get rid of the smell from the dog’s point of view and she’ll tend to return to where she went before.

how to house train a puppy?
we are thinking of buying a dog but a fearfull of it messing up our carpet many videos talk about crate training but this will be our first dog so we dont understand this term is there anyother ways than ‘cratetraining’?
thanks

Anna Walker answers:
Your new puppy will have a few accidents in the house, thats totally normal. Take it outside after it has eaten, woken up and after it has been playing then about every hour after that. If you see the puppy sniffing the floor alot and walking in circles take the puppy outside, remember to give it lots of praise when it goes outside.
If it has a wee or poo in the house before you manage to get it outside, say ‘no’ in a firm voice, pick the puppy out and take it outside, then clean its mess up. If it has an accident in the house and you dont see the puppy do it, DONT punish the puppy, just clean the mess up

How To Train my Dog?
How to train my Adult Golden Retriver to Sit, Stay, fetch, and Come. I dont really have time to read books or watch videos, or take his to class. please help
i take him for 2 hour walks everyday
he has the run of the house and a fenced in yard to run in.
i spend lots of time with him

Anna Walker answers:
Teaching older dogs are trickier. However, get a leash and teach sit first, get treats, and push his butt down as you are saying sit, when he does sit, give him pets and a treat, while at the same time as sitting say stay and if he moves, tug on the leash a little bit while you yourself are calm, they can feel tension even when you do not know you have any. Come should not be a problem, you might have to keep him on a leash while outside for a while, but go into the fenced yard and practice calling him to you and when he does treat him. Dogs usually learn fetch by themselves, dropping the ball can be a little differently based on the breed, just keep taking it out of his mouth, til he realizes that you are going to be throwing it again for him. Make sure that your adult dog knows that you are the one in charge.

Ways to train an older dog?
I have a samoyed/american eskimo mix we’re not too sure what he is because he’s too big for an eskimo and too small for a samoyed. Anyway my dog pees in the house frequently but we never catch him in the act and we don’t notice until after he’s done it. We used to have a trainer for him because he also hates the neighbors dog and fights at the fence with him whenever he seems him so we try to avoid that. The trainer wanted to bell train him and that was when we’d put a bell around the door and he’d ring it whenever he had to pee but my mom let her go before that could happen. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to do the bell training? Or any other way & way for him to stop peeing in the house? I’d close the door to upstairs (where he mainly pees) but my sister would forget to close it. Please leave any videos if you have them. Thanks in advance(:
P.s he’s about two or three years old we adopted him from a shelter but they didn’t know how told he was they picked him up wandering a street

Anna Walker answers:
Try crate training. Take him out of the crate first thing in the morning, again about 15-20 minutes after each feeding, and before bed. Since he’s not house broken at all u may have to take him out once during the night but most healthy adult dogs will not potty where they eat. He should get the picture that he is suppose to potty outside in about a week or so. Also if u catch him when he is about to pee make a loud noise to stop him and immediately take him out side.
