Any information on keeping peregrine falcons?

After seeing several birds of prey during long back seat drives along open moterways, I have become fasinated with the peregrine falcon!
ivseen many videos of them on youtube and read lots of info on the web!
But i cant seem to find any information on keeping them as pets. (If ‘pet’ is the correct word to use?)
Theres nothing i would love more than to have one of these companions acompany me and the dogs in the field!
any information or links about this would be very helpful in my research!
how to house them, conditions, how to train etc.
Thankyou very much!

Anna Walker answers:

You aren’t a licensed falconer yet? It’s hugely expensive. Apprenticeship w a legal falconer, licenses, housing, inspections from fish & game. Anyone w a falcon is expected to be able to train it themselves. They don’t come ready to hunt w you. It’s not a hobby it’s a lifestyle. If you can find a way to ask YA Birds you can google info on falconry. The inter-web is loaded w information. At least show that much interest. If in UK google ‘falconry in UK”. Do the same if in USA but change UK to USA.

Btw, these birds can injure you. Experienced falconers get nailed (as being taloned is called) all the time. Larger birds of prey (golden eagles for example) can grasp your arm and keep squeezing until they break a bone. Maybe not the birds intention but fear/surprise/eagerness causes accidents.

How do I stop my German Shepherd/Lab from going nuts at people/dogs?

Okay, I got this beautiful pup when I was small and my Mother and Father are POOR parents let alone good people to watch my dog…. sorry but it’s true lol they are. Anyways, being that I was young and just wanted something to say.. look at my pup!!! and not really realizing the hard work that goes into maintaining my baby to be full health and happiness. I forgot to feed her sometimes and my mom would feed her less or more. We fed her table food… which was the WORST thing that i could have ever done.. she will not eat ANY doggy dry/wet food at all.. I’ve tried all.. Innova/Blue/every other brand that has no harmful ingredients and she will NOT touch it.. she will starve herself and puke yellow stuff all day, :’[ I cry everyday from this but she refuses. I do not have enough money to feed her the good meats and veggies(“ppl” food) and my mom will def. not allow that. anyways.. lol real question here ..
why is she going bananas over people walking by or especially dogs, she will bark like she wants to bite ur head off and pull SOOO hard at the person. she had not been properly socialized at all. I did train her … she is amazingly smart and is such a good baby inside the house. she goes potty outside, she sits.. paw.. speak.. stay.. come.. says I love you lol not a joke, look youtube and search that.. exactly what she does lol she rolls over .. she plays dead(stays on back) she’ll keep the treat on her nose till I say ok have it… I mean she’s amazing indoors like I said but outdoors is a complete nightmare. My dad does abuse her, not to the point of blood but will give her a knock on the head and punch in the stomach :’[ I know I’m crying as i type but of course I can not tell my dad what to do and I tell him all the time stop it but yeah… anyone give me some tips cause I refuse to give her away, over my dead body. Something that I can do while I’m on a walk with her? Any bark collars? etc etc that you recommend?? Any help is greatly appreciated tyvm!!!!!

Anna Walker answers:

My dog used to go nuts about chasing squirrels and for a while (after he saw our late dog be hit by a truck) would lunge at passing by trucks (VERY worrisome!). When walking her, one thing the shelter I volunteer for is wrap the leash around the dog’s torso (it’s connected to the collar still though, but after that it’s wrapped around the body).

This is uncomfortable for them, and we do it with dogs that pull too hard, because their new focus is trying to get the leash off of their body (they’ll still walk, but pause to try to nip at the leash. It’s harmless, but distracting). Or you could try a muzzle when walking her. It gives you more control of her head, and most dogs want to try to take it off (look, another distraction from people and/or pets!).

Watch her closely when taking her outside. As soon as you notice her start staring at a person or pet (before she barks or pulls), instantly turn her around and walk the opposite way. If she tries turning, give her a tug and give a verbal command like, “no” or “leave it”. If you can, you can also try making her sit before the person gets close enough to catch her attention. Then get a treat or something to distract her. Keep her focused on you while the person/pet passes. Let her know she’s a good girl as long as she pays no mind to the other person/dog. If she starts looking at them, quickly distract her, turn her around, or do whatever you have to do to get her attention back to you.

If worst comes to worst (which it shouldn’t with a German shepherd mix, they’re such smart dogs, and labs are usually easy to train and sweet), they make a barking collar that sprays a very foul odor every time the dog barks. But just a warning, if you use that you’ll have to deal with a stinky dog (I personally can’t stand the smell).

a penny for your thoughts on how in depth mmorpg’s may eventually go?

i play WoW which is a little too basic for my tastes (very addictive though)

but i’m wondering, do people think that eventually mmorpgs will get so advanced that we can actually attend virtual schools within them? perhaps learning about physics, math, art, science, history, etc, etc?

and perhaps see who may be the best players at actually piloting US ARMY unmanned aerial-drones, and robots etc .. like this dog http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpBG-nSRcrQ maybe?

you get the idea i think … basically how long before we start creating little micro-matrix’s within these games?

like imagine just in WoW, if we could have our own houses, and invite other players in just to watch cable tv on an in game TV, or mp3s on the stereo etc?

or will mmorpgs even take this direction ever?

i think maybe “second life” came close … to my understanding people could program anything they wanted into the game, but legal issues stopped reality in regard to digital pregnant teenagers, and banks that could launder real money .. i’m not sure though, because i could never get that game installed

lastly if i just wanted to play an mmorpg right now … which one would you say, most accurately would let me (in a simulation i know) control theoretical unmanned vehicles, robots, and aerial drones, with weapons capability etc? .. for like potential army training or whatever .. “someone has to drive the robots” ~ that’s good, i think i’ll write it down lol

thankyou

My list only goes to April 2009, and sorry for any other great questions I have missed out, but what is the best question of 2009 in your opinion? Feel free to include any question not listed here.
This question was meant to be a bit of fun, but it looks like I am about to alienate myself from everyone on G&WS who is not on the list : (

Anna Walker answers:

No.3 and No.5 are great questions, kind of overlapping. These things happen in most of the world. Open hate and cruelty against men is accepted, but even slight complaint about women is shouted down and condemned.

Starting a new relationship with puppy and training help?

Background Info:

I’m 14 years old and I got my puppy on September 20 and he was 5 months at the time. He is now about 7 almost 8 months old. The first month I absolutely loved him, never left him, watched him as he slept and all that good stuff. After a while and a lot of training attempts gave me frustration and so I started to stop walking him, stop training him, and I’ve been ignoring him a lot when he’s in my room or when I’m on the computer etc. My dad gets home about 7 everyday and he always plays with him and it seems so much more meaningful when my dad plays with him than when I do. Maybe I see it that way because I’m jealous? Also I have a problem, whenever I get frustrated I tend to pick him up and shake him and bear hug him really hard. This used to happen a lot but I’ve been trying to stop and I know he hates it. My role in taking care of the dog is taking him out, feeding him, picking up his poop, bathing him, walking him, nearly everything. My dad feeds him and takes him out and plays with him more than I play with him and I’ve been really really lazy with the walking and training. Oh also, I let him sleep in my room at night in his cage. He still isn’t completely potty trained, he rarely has pee accidents but he poops a lot in the house. I may have left some things out but here are the questions:

1. Is it too late for me to start over with my puppy?
2. Should I be the only one that feeds him? Trains him?
3. Does him sleeping in my room change anything or should I just keep him in the laundry room at night when he sleeps?
4. How do I get him to look at me as a father or pack leader?
5. How should potty training go? Techniques, tricks?
- For potty training, should I give him a treat every time I say go potty and he goes?
6. Should I make a schedule to walk him twice a day and specific training times?

Training questions:

7. What are some tricks I can teach him?
-Currently he knows how to sit, shake, lay down, and roll over.
8. How should I play with him without wrestling him?
-I read that if I wrestle him and he bites etc. he looks to me as a littermate instead of a pack leader or dad. What are some ways I can play with him without wrestling? The only thing I can really think of is fetch and that kinda gets repetitive after a while.

I really want my dog to love me and I need to stop being lazy. Please, if you have anything to add share it please!

Oh and he’s a beagle/chihuahua mix and he looks like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjlVzgm18…

Thank you so much if you’re able to answer all these questions!

Anna Walker answers:

As much as I hope you are joking, I have a sinking feeling that you aren’t.

1. No. It is never too late but you will have to regain his trust.
2. He is your dog. So it is your responsibility.
3. If he is used to sleeping in a crate in your room, let him sleep in his crate in your room
4. Train him and interact with him.
5. The only thing he needs is praise. Treats aren’t necessary. Take him out right after he eats and every 2-3 hours. If he goes pee/poop praise him. If he doesn’t, put him in the crate for 10 min and try again. Don’t get mad or frustrated. If he goes in the house, clean it up quickly and then use an enzyme cleaner to remove the smell so he doesn’t think that is a place to go.
6. Yes.
7. Work on the housebreaking first. Then look on YouTube and find some tricks you like
8. Throw a ball, hide treats, brush him, tug-o-war, training time, etc.
